A Guide To Restaurants In Chinatown
Chinatown is home to a large number of Chinese restaurants, each one offering their own excuisite cuisine. The number of restaurants has grown over the years and this all stems back from the 1950's and 1960's when many Chinese agricultural workers became very disillusioned with their way of life and came to Britain, keen to look for a new way of life and to earn a living. By this time the Chinese restaurant trade was booming - this was mainly due to the fact that there were now a new breed of customers who had grown fond of the Chinese cuisine, these were not Chinese people but British soldiers who had been posted abroad during the Far East war and had grown used to the food after living on it for a while.
Many of the Chinese immigrants settled in Bayswater and Soho in London, which because of the booming success of the restaurants, later became known as Chinatown. Following on from this, more and more immigrants came over to Britain in the 1970's, these were refugees from Vietnam, who were fleeing their country from the Vietnam war. These people arrived in the Lambeth and Lewisham boroughs of London and this saw the emergence of Vietnemese restaurants.
Nowadays, with such a vast number of Chinese restaurants and a never ending choice of cuisine, it is a near impossible task for tourists and visitors to choose which one to eat at. The restaurants vary slightly with their opening hours, menus and the seating capacity but our one handy tip would be to keep an eye out and see which restaurant has the most Chinese people eating in it!! This will give you a good indicator as to the quality of the food - if the Chinese people eat it, it must be pretty good.
