Buckingham Palace has been the official home of the Royal Family for over 166 years,  Queen Victoria was the first monarch to make Buckingham Palace her official home. It is possible to tell if  the present Queen is in residence, if the flag on the east front is flying the Queen is in residence. 

In the summer the Royal family moves to the court of Balmoral it is at this time that the palace open's for a few weeks in order that the general public can visit.  During a tour of the Palace you  get the chance to view the State Dining Room and Throne Room, with perhaps the vaulted picture galley been the highlight, the gallery stretches down the centre of the Palace. Included in the collection of art are masterpieces in Ruben, Rembrandt and Van Dyck.

Changing of the guard were soldiers from the Queens regiment formally hand over the keys to the palace, takes place on the forecourt on alternate mornings at 1130. This is an extremely popular ceremony, so it is advisable to arrive early for a good view.
